Movies.com: Why MacKenzie Foy Might Be Twilight’s Next Big Star
In a new article, Movies.com discusses why young Mackenzie Foy (Renesmee Cullen) might be the next
big star, and several fan sites weighed in.
One of the things about Foy is the fact that she does uncannily resemble both Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart. In a franchise that is very concerned with character appearance, this was one hurdle met. In an interview last year, director Bill Condon spoke about the resemblances and being overjoyed that Foy both looked the part and had the acting chops as well. “Mackenzie Foy was like; wow that’s it [with her audition]. She looks like their daughter and there’s just a quality she had, you know. I mean and it was such a relief because Renesmee was so tough to picture and imagine, you know? So I have to say she was just like, I think we’ve got it right there, and then I showed her to everybody else and everybody agreed.” Fans also echoed Condon’s sentiment. Every time Foy spoke there were audible, adoring sighs from the crowd.Read more at Movies.com.

Breaking Dawn director Bill Condon returning to musical roots with ‘Side Show’
According to an article in the Washington Post :
The Kennedy Center and San Diego’s La Jolla Playhouse announced on Tuesday that the 1997 show, with music by “Dreamgirls” composer Henry Krieger and book and lyrics by Bill Russell, will be revived a year and a half from now, starting in La Jolla and later coming to Washington, with a revised book and score by its originators. On dates :
This time around, however, the director will be filmmaker and screenwriter Bill Condon, who adapted and directed “Dreamgirls” for the screen and wrote the screenplay for the Oscar-winning film version of “Chicago.” No casting has been announced.
Specific dates have yet to be worked out, but Kennedy Center officials say that the show will first be produced at La Jolla Playhouse, under artistic director is Christopher Ashley, in the fall of 2013. According to Kennedy Center’s president, Michael M. Kaiser, that engagement will be followed by a run in the center’s Eisenhower Theater beginning in June 2014.Read the entire article HERE
Robert Pattinson needs a new nickname!
It’s official: Robert Pattinson is tired of his “RPattz” nickname. Read the article below from MTV.
This week’s “Twilight” Tuesday is dedicated to helping Pattinson come up with that “something else.” I enlisted the trusty nickname-generating minds of my colleagues here at MTV News.
My five favorite suggestions are: Bob Pattz, Pattzy Cline, Robward, the Artist Formerly Known as Edward Cullen, and St. Pattzy (shout-outs to Kevin Sullivan, Jason Kaufman and MVP Jessica Hyndman for their brilliant suggestions).
Those familiar enough with Pattinson know him as Rob, so perhaps he would be open to the public embracing the equally familiar-sounding Bob. And if he doesn’t like any form of Pattz, perhaps we can go with Bob Patts? “The Artist Formerly Known as Edward Cullen” is lots of fun, but a little wordy for most headlines, so maybe we can shorten to TAFKaEC — or go all the way Prince and think up an appropriate symbol.
Another option is to shorten to his initials, RP, though that might not be descriptive enough to indicate we’re talking about Pattinson and it might be too close to R.I.P., which does not help the cause at all. Maybe we should go old-school with his initial suggestion of Spunk Ransom.
Here at MTV News, we’ve been aware of Pattinson’s dislike for the moniker since our first interactions with the heartthrob on the set of “Twilight”
when he thought up his own nickname, Spunk Ransom. However, according
to a recent interview promoting “Bel Ami” and his upcoming “Cosmopolis”
with U.K. newspaper The Guardian, Pattinson revealed that he would like nothing more than for everyone to forget all about RPattz.
“When I got this part, every single article that came out was
‘RPattz’s struggle for credibility!’; I don’t understand who invented
that thing, ‘RPattz,’ I want to strangle them,” he told the paper. “But
once you’ve made that step, everything afterwards is not like, ‘RPattz’s
continuing struggle for credibility!’ You’ve got to come up with
something else, so it gets a little bit easier.”This week’s “Twilight” Tuesday is dedicated to helping Pattinson come up with that “something else.” I enlisted the trusty nickname-generating minds of my colleagues here at MTV News.

‘Breaking Dawn Part 2′ Confirmed to be at Comic Con 2012
From Collider:
We’re a month away from San Diego Comic-Con 2012, so all of the Twilight fans can start lining up outside Hall H right now. Yes, it’s been confirmed that Lionsgate-Summit’s finale, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2, will be making an appearance in the “halliest of halls” thissummer. But what else will make the con worth standing in the Hall H line? How about Iron Man 3, Man of Steel and Pacific Rim for starters? Unfortunately, Comic-Con looks to be a no-show forThe Dark Knight Rises (except for maybe a Tumbler Tour), but that should come as no surprise. What IS surprising is the lack of any Star Trek 2 presence. Hit the jump for more scheduling information and details on what you can (and can’t) see at Comic-Con 2012.[Source: Collider]
Universal Moves Forward with ‘Snow White and the Huntsman 2′
From HW Hills:
Twilight’s Kristen Stewart to go corrupt & evil in new ‘Snow White Huntsman’ 2 sequel movie. As previously reported, Universal Pictures has decided to move forward with a sequel flick for “Snow White and the Huntsman,” and the plotline sounds quite interesting for Twilight Saga hottie Kristen Stewart as we may see her character ,Snow White, get corrupt and evil, now that she has taken over the throne.[Source: HW Hills via Twilightish]
Director Rupert Sanders recently chatted with MTV News, and told them, “I think the corruption of power would be the second one. I think we’ve created this very chaste girl who’s got to this position and now she’s in this position of supreme power. People who get powerful sometimes lose their bearings and abuse that power and that’s kind of an intoxicating theme.”
I totally agree with Sanders on this plotline. I think it would make for a very unique, interesting take on the Snow White character, especially since we’ve only heard stories of the good Snow White and all the “happily ever after” BS. Stay tuned.

In addition, the studio is currently in the process of wooing back director Rupert Sanders, who was not originally contracted for a follow-up.Read more here.
As for the actors, all three leads (Kristen Stewart, Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron) are expected to return.

James Franco reviews ‘Snow White & the Huntsman’for the Huffington Post
Actor James Franco recently wrote an article for the Huffington Post giving a review of Kristen Stewart and her film Snow White and the Huntsman. Check it out below :
Read the rest HERESnow White and the Huntsman looks great and the actors are fabulous. The film gives us everything that it should: beauty, danger, romance, action, fantasy and a rewarding ending. Of course, this movie isn’t breaking new narrative ground — who expected that? In fact, the script by Evan Daugherty — a fellow NYU film school grad — is more than loyal to the familiar set pieces of the original story: three drops of blood on the snow, fair skin, dark hair, a wicked witch, a magic mirror, dwarves and a poisoned apple. The main addition to the classic tale is forecasted in the title. The Huntsman, played by handsome Chris Hemsworth, steals the meat of the role traditionally played by the dwarves: bonding with Snow White out in the woods. His presence means the film has less time to explore the dynamics of the makeshift family with the dwarves, which would be forgivable if only his romantic connection with Snow White were given enough space to develop properly. Some critics might go after the actors for being flat — Nana said it seemed like Hemsworth was playing Thor in different clothes, and Iris, who worked on the first two Twilight films, praised Stewart but was still reminded of Bella Swan. We discussed, and Iris and Nana came around. They blamed the actors less — I mean, the actors are going to look like themselves from movie to movie; it’s not like they’re character actors — and started to look at the material they’d been given to work with. If Stewart and Hemsworth don’t entirely pull off the romance of the year, it’s the fault not of their acting as much as the script’s structure. And if their previous incarnations are trailing them, that has less to do with their performances than with the overwhelmingly large place their previous roles occupy in our present culture. Whether they heed it or not, those two are under a ton of pressure: Is Chris just an unusually rugged man with a deep voice, or can he play anything other than a Norse god? Is Kristen just a pouty Vampire lover riding a temporary wave of pop culture madness, or is she the real deal? I believe that they are both talented and special performers who make the most of their material in this film. What’s interesting is the way its story parallels the plight of the actors themselves.

Next Movie: Why Bella and Edward Top Jack and Rose from ‘Titanic’
Next Movie put together this list of why Bella and Edward will always top the Titanic couple Jack and Rose.
Head over to Next Movie to read the full list!Instant AttractionRob and Kristen are both extremely beautiful creatures. From their first curious eye contact across the cafeteria in “Twilight,” it became clear that these two would become something special for Hollywood. Whereas Rose was busy turning up her nose at Jack on the lido deck and seeking an out from her opulent life, Bella and Edward’s curiosity about each other was piqued at the outset … though for very different reasons. Consequently, the world became as instantly enamored with Bella and Edward as they were with one another, and R.Pattz and K-Stew became A-listers with household names right away (and no one had to get naked on the couch for that to happen, either).
The Love StoryThe romance of Bella and Edward is one for the ages. Not only is their passion for one another intense and all-consuming, but it also completely alters the meaning of forever. All I’m saying is immortal eternity lasts a lot longer than a boat ride across the Atlantic (especially when it crashes halfway).
FandemoniumNothing, and I do mean nothing, compares to the fan fervor surrounding Rob, Kristen and the rest of the “Twilight” gang. It outpaces, out-screams, and out-devotes anything and everything else. The L.A. premieres nearly put Occupy Wall Street to shame, with fans lining up by the hundreds and camping out for days just to catch a glimpse of the cast all dolled up. No one stands a chance in a vote-off against Rob and Kristen, as proven time and time again in the MTV Movie Awards’ yearly “Best Kiss” race, and there’s a now-old adage that if either of them were to ever join Twitter, the social network would literally explode. It’s probably true. “Twilight,” simply put, has defined fandemonium.

DKNY:Five Questions With Ashley Greene
WWD: You are playing a fashion designer in your first TV series, the pilot “Americana,” filming now. Did you learn any great tips or tricks on set?Source: Bella’s Diary
Ashley Greene: Pat Field is the costume designer and she took a vintage coat and turned it inside out and then belted it, which gave it a really vintage distressed look, which was great.
WWD: What items of clothing are in heavy rotation in your personal wardrobe?
Ashley Greene: DKNY skinny jeans are always a staple for me, and they have amazing (and actually reversible) shearling coats that I’ve been wearing a lot.
WWD: What music are you listening to these days?
Ashley Greene: I like Pandora.com a lot because I just plug in a song and it goes. I’ve gone back to Ray LaMontagne a lot lately, Taylor Swift’s new song on the “Hunger Games” soundtrack is so good, and I’m a huge fan of Bruno Mars.
WWD: Any fun summer plans?
Ashley Greene: Hopefully I’ll be working, assuming the pilot gets picked up. I think Fourth of July is one holiday I always try and go back home for, so if I have time I’ll hopefully get to Jacksonville, Florida.
WWD: With the “Twilight” series coming to end, did you nick anything special from the set?
Ashley Greene: Not this last time, but in the very beginning I took Alice’s Cullen crest necklace, which is pretty awesome, so I have that still, and I took the Jackie Ohh Ray-Ban sunglasses from the second movie. But then I stopped; I thought they are going to start yelling at me.

Lionsgate Used Taylor Lautner’s Popularity to Promote ‘The Hunger Games’
Apparently Lionsgate made good use of Taylor’s popularity when he was promoting Abduction last year! Here is what The Hollywood Reporter is reporting!
Hunger Games — the big-screen adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ best-selling young-adult novel starring Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth – was little known on U.K. shores 12 months ago but despite unseasonable warm barbecue weather for March, still managed to open with more than twice the box office of the first Twilight film here.Head HERE to read more!
Lionsgate U.K. co-founder and chief executive Zygi Kamasa told The Hollywood Reporter that a big part of the U.K. release strategy began with the source novel and worked closely with the book’s publisher Scholastic here to do just that.
While Lionsgate was rolling out the Lautner-starrer Abduction in September last year, the savvy distributor gave the first 20,000 theatergoers a copy of Colllins’ book.
“In the U.S. there really wasn’t a need to build awareness for the book in the same way as we had to here,” Kamasa said.

Rob Pattinson Talks the End of the Twilight Saga with Movies.ie
How did you prepare for Edward and Bella becoming parents in this film? Did you draw on anything from your own childhood?Read more at the Source!
Robert Pattinson: Not really. No-one really knows how to be a father when you first begin – there’s no way to prepare for it. And it’s very easy to react to holding a baby, especially when the baby is looking like a newborn and you have just delivered it – it’s very simple, as it’s just crying in your hands, so you end up being very careful with it and stuff. But it is strange when Mackenzie (Foy) starts playing Renesmee, as you suddenly have to think, “My daughter is now 11. It’s two months after she is born and she can speak.” So that was a complicated thing to play. But it’s a fantasy movie, so I guess you just go along with it. It is the ultimate fantasty, I guess, to some people, that you can avoid all the annoyingparts of having a kid, if they’re already fending for themselves. It’s like having a puppy. Just leave it alone and thank you very much.
Trust me, it’s nothing like having a puppy.
Robert Pattinson: That’s what I keep saying in other interviews that, “It’s just like raising a dog, it’s the same thing, you’ve just got to leave it alone and tell it to go to the toilet outside.”
The fourth book is very different from the others, especially with the sex scenes – the first three books are very chaste. How was that to film?
Robert Pattinson: It’s funny when people talk about the sex scenes in the book, because there aren’t actually any sex scenes in the book, it’s all people’s imagination. So when they think, “Oh, this is so hardcore,” it actually almost fades to black every single time, and it just shows little bits of the aftermath.
Really, the book is the best example of how to keep something censored but still be erotic or whatever, because you are playing totally on people’s imaginations. Like the thing with the feathers, they don’t mention anything apart from the fact that there are feathers afterwards, but that’s why all the fans are so fixated on the feathers: “They’ve got to show the feathers in the movie!” It’s all their imagination, all their fantasies about the story are based on that one image, but the whole sex scene is totally in their own heads.

Simmons). Gathegi will play Darren, one of Tony’s workers. Also cast in the pilot is Johnny Pemberton as Tony’s teen nephew. Both the Lionsgate and Summit labels are expected to continue and be active in the production and distribution of films, although the combined company expects to realize significant synergies through theSource: InvestorsLionsgate via The Hungers Games movie.netconsolidation of administrative and other costs.
With this announcement there has been talk of The Twilight Saga continuing past Breaking Dawn Part 2. Here is what Gossip Cop is reporting!
There’s a chance The Twilight Saga couldHere is some of Summit’s response to the Lionsgate/Summit deal:continue after the fifth film opens in November.
The bombshell was reportedly dropped by Jon Feltheimer, the chief executive officer of Lionsgate Entertainment, which acquired Twilight studio Summit Entertainment for $412.5 million on Friday.
“I’m anticipating Breaking Dawn – Part 2 being $700 million-plus in worldwide box office,” said Feltheimer of the final (planned) installment in the hit vampire franchise.
According to the Los Angeles Times, when asked whether Lionsgate could envision more Twilight past next fall’s fifth film, Feltheimer left the door open.
“It’s hard for me to imagine a movie that does $700 million-plus doesn’t have ongoing value,” he said. “It’s an amazing franchise that they have done a great job of maintaining with absolutely no deterioration.”
He added, “So the simple answer is, ‘Boy, I hope so.’”
It’s not clear whether a potential continuation would involve future films or a television series.
Summit Entertainment co-chairmen Rob Friedman and Patrick Wachsbergerplan to be at their desks Tuesday morning doing business as usual, both said on Friday after it was announced that Summit will be acquired by Lionsgate.Head to THR to see more!
“What we’ve made clear is we have two businesses running parallel,” Friedman toldThe Hollywood Reporter in an interview on Friday. “They are merging but they are going to continue operating [separately].”
Lionsgate announced Friday it had closed its leveraged buyout of Summit, home to the Twilight franchise, in a deal for $412.5 million in cash and stock and the assumption of Summit’s $500 milliondebt .

Who Will Be Sitting with Rob at the People’s Choice Awards?
There has been some confusion over whether Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner will be attending the PCS with Rob tomorrow after two different seating charts showed up online today. Sadly it appears that neither Kristen nor Taylor will be attending the PCA’s on Wednesday!
Here is the original seating chart which was treated by @markmalkin and is being confirmed by Gossip Cop as the correct seating chart.
Here is what Gossip Cop said:
Twitter is abuzz with speculation that Kristen Stewart will attend Wednesday’s “People’s Choice Awards.”
Though she’s not one of the previously announced celebrity guests, an audience placard for Stewart was curiously shown on Tuesday night’s “Entertainment Tonight.”
In the clip, the seating arrangement has Stewart sitting next to her boyfriend and Twilightco-star Robert Pattinson.
So, is Stewart really going to be at the People’s Choice Awards?
Nope.
A source close to the star tells Gossip Copexclusively that the pictured seating chart is “bulls**t.”
The insider says they wanted “a headshot of [Stewart] for a skit,” but it’s unclear whether they’ll actually be doing the skit or not.
Regardless, while Pattinson is attending the awards show to support his nomination forWater For Elephants, Stewart was NEVER scheduled to appear and will NOT be there.

Will 2012 Be Taylor’s Year?
Will 2012 be the year Taylor’s career outside of The Twilight Saga takes off? Here is what The Twilight Examiner had to say.
Finally, with Taylor Lautner, he’s got a little bit of work to do, but he’s already making really good moves. For a while there, he was snagging job after job with very heavy paychecks. He was touted as part of the new “A-list” and had more future projects lined up than almost anyone else in the cast. The first film to come to fruition was Abduction, an action film featuring his first turn in a leading role. Unfortunately, something didn’t sync up with that movie and it struck a chord with neither critics nor general audiences.
This year could turn it all around, though. Not only does he have one interesting project in pre-production (Incarceron, a sci-fi prison-style picture based on the Catherine Fisher novel of the same name), but he’s also going to be teaming up with director Gus Van Sant on an indie project supposedly based on an article from The New Yorker. Otherwise, he’s still keeping a foot in the action arena, reportedly signing on for Goliath and a few other projects (one of which might include director Michael Bay). Being hardworking has always been a strength for Taylor Lautner, and that determination will carry over well for him when tackling these new projects. Once things get going on some of these, he should be on his way.

Taylor Lautner, Booboo Stewart, and Robert Pattinson made Capricho’s ‘Drool List’
Taylor Lautner, Booboo Stewart, and Robert Pattinson made Capricho’s list of 40 guys that made us drool a lot in 2011. Taylor came in at #1!
1. Taylor Lautner
No wonder he was voted “International Eye Drops” at whim Awards. In 2011, Taylor Lautner showed that a six pack is not only beautiful, but a talented actor with a promising future. In the role of Nathan in the movie “No Exit”, the guy showed a hand full of action even more than his character Jacob, “Breaking Dawn”. In the penultimate film “Twilight,” Tay took off his shirt, made baby face, joke and did – oh, oh! - Drew gasps and sighs of most people.
11. Robert Pattinson
Beautiful, charming, intelligent, funny! Rob Pattz was another actor who this year had a chance to surprise us with another character. Like Jacob, in “Water for Elephants,” we saw something very different vampire Edward in “Breaking Dawn”. The penultimate film of the saga premiered in theaters in November and was a box office record.
35. Boo Boo Stewart
We’ve been looking at Boo Boo’s séééculos! But after his performance was very cute in “Dawn” we were convinced that he is the perfect cub. In this film, he drew even more attention on the role of Seth.

Betty Confidential: Katniss (Hunger Games) vs Bella
Betty Confidential has created a Hunger Games vs Twilight smackdown by developing a friendly competition between both books main heroines Katniss Everdeen and Bella Swan. Read on for details:
It’s no secret that we’re mildly (okay, completely) obsessed with all things related to Suzanne Collins’ Hunger Games trilogy. Set in a dystopian future, the story centers around Katniss Everdeen, a teenager who must fight for her life in a twisted tournament of death run by the government. Naturally, we’re super psyched about the upcoming movie based on the books.
Before the March 2012 big screen debut of The Hunger Games, we decided to pull Katniss out of the arena and square her off against another well-known female lead: Bella Swan ofStephenie Meyer’s Twilight series. Most of us have watched the love fest between Bella and Edward blossom in Breaking Dawn Part I, but how long would the newly-minted member of the Cullen family last against the vengeance-seeking freedom fighter from District 12?
We divided this friendly competition up into the three categories we believe every heroine should possess: strength, both emotional and physical; wit; and loyalty.
Visit Betty Confidential to find out how each character fared in each category.

Rob and Taylor on Next Movies “30 Actors to Watch in 2012″ List
Next Movie is celebrating the New Year by looking at 30 actors to watch in this years biggest blockbusters. Rob came in at #15 and Taylor came in at #20.
Robert Pattinson
Starring in: “Bel Ami” (March 2); “Cosmopolis”; “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2″ (Nov. 16)
Why It’s a Big Year: Just call him the prince of adaptations. Pattinson tackles three literary heroes in 2012: Guy de Maupassant’s manipulative Parisian in the period drama “Bel Ami,” Don DeLillo’s shallow Manhattan billionaire in “Cosmopolis” and — of course — Stephenie Meyer’s eternally young vampire in love, Edward Cullen, in the final “Twilight.”
Taylor Lautner
Starring in: “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2″ (Nov. 16)
Why It’s a Big Year: When we last saw Lautner’s lovesick werewolf Jacob Black, he was kneeling in adoration before Bella and Edward’s human-vampire baby daughter. The final chapter of Stephenie Meyer’s epic supernatural romance should shatter box-office records and further solidify Lautner as the sexiest perpetually shirtless actor of his generation.

The Playlist’s ’50 Most Anticipated Films Of 2012′ Includes ‘Twilight’ Actors Movies
The Playlist has put together a list of 50 of the most anticipated movies this year. Cosmopolis (starring Robert Pattinson), The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (starring Lee Pace), The Master (starring Rami Malek), and On the Road (starring Kristen Stewart) have been included in the list.
“Cosmopolis”
Synopsis: Based on the novel by American authorDon DeLillo, it centers on Eric Packer (Robert Pattinson), a young multi-billionaire making an epic, ultimately doomed limo ride across New York City.
What You Need to Know: David Cronenberg is enjoying an unparalleled level of critical and commercial acceptance after decades hovering on the fringe. At the outset, “Cosmopolis” seems to fall in line with the mannered, critic-friendly films of the recent Cronenberg era. It is, after all, an adaptation of a critically revered and best-selling novel and stars hunky heartthrob-of-the-moment Robert Pattinson. But on closer inspection, the movie seems more atypical and dangerous (a good thing, since “A Dangerous Method” felt far too safe for a filmmaker known for exploding heads and genital mutilation), taking place primarily in a stretch limousine as it crawls through New York City (not exactly a cinematic conceit). A number of Cronenberg’s favorite thematic tics are explored, too, including man’s relationship with modern technology, the messiness of murder and sexual obsession. So while it might be sold as another buttoned-up late era Cronenberg think piece, we’re hoping it’s going to be ruder, looser, and more like the days of yore, even if it has to be without the exploding heads and genital mutilation.
Release Date: With press for “A Dangerous Method” occupying much of Cronenberg’s time in the fall of 2011, our guess is the fall film festival circuit will be the earliest we see the picture.
“The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey”
Synopsis: In the first of a two-part prequel to “The Lord of the Rings,” Bilbo Baggins relates an early journey with Gandalf and a pack of unruly dwarves to steal a horde of treasure from the dragon Smaug.
What You Need To Know: Given that the original trilogy was near-universally beloved, a giant box-office hit (taking close to $3 billion worldwide) and even managed to be win a record haul of Oscars with its last installment, getting “The Hobbit,” J.R.R. Tolkien‘s novel set, and written, before “The Lord of the Rings” proved surprisingly tricky, with rights issues and studio bankruptcy holding the project up for years, even before original director Guillermo Del Toro bailed. But Peter Jackson‘s finally returned to Middle Earth, and if the recent atmospheric teaser is anything to go by, he hasn’t forgotten what he’s doing. Settling back into the world feels like putting on a comfortable pair of old shoes, and the filmmaker looks to have the perfect Bilbo in “The Office” star Martin Freeman, who leads a group of new arrivals to the franchise including Richard Armitage, James Nesbitt, Aidan Turner, Luke Evans, Benedict Cumberbatch, Stephen Fry, Lee Pace and Evangeline Lilly, along with many returning favorites. We have our reservations: is Jackson’s heart really in it, after spending so long saying he didn’t want to direct the film? Will the two-part structure feel padded and indulgent for a book that only runs to 285 pages? Will having a baker’s dozen of dwarves mean that they blend into one? We hope not, and if anyone can pull it off, it’s the hirsute New Zealander.
Release Date: December 14th
“The Master”
Synopsis: After returning home from WWII, a charismatic intellectual (Philip Seymour Hoffman) launches a faith-based organization and taps a young drifter (Joaquin Phoenix) as his right-hand man.
What You Need to Know: With just five films spread out over the last fifteen years, Paul Thomas Anderson has become one of the most celebrated American directors working today. It’s been nearly half a decade since his masterpiece “There Will Be Blood” became the directors highest-grossing and most critically acclaimed film — his longest gap ever — but the wait seems worthwhile. His latest reteams the director with former muse Hoffman who portrays a man who starts his own religion during the 1950s and becomes the “master of ceremonies,” supposedly with strong parallels to Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard. Phoenix, in his first post-”retirement” role, plays the drifter he recruits, with Amy Adams and Laura Dern along for the ride too. Despite being less than 12 months from release the film is still shrouded in secrecy with even the title still up in the air. We reviewed an early rough draft of the script all the way back in February of 2010 and after several stops and starts (eventually being rescued by every cinephile’s favorite heiress Megan Ellison), the film is finally on its way, though the script has surely evolved since that minimal sketch was leaked. Initially hailed as a disciple of Scorsese and Altman, Anderson’s now finding himself being compared to another auteur whose films grew more masterful as well as increasingly further apart: Kubrick. All of this makes “The Master” quite possibly our most anticipated film of 2012.
Release Date: Assume a late fall release
“On The Road”
Synopsis: A long-time-coming adaptation of Jack Kerouac‘s famous Beat Generation novel. Drifter poets Sal Paradise and Dean Moriarty travel across the country in search of themselves, colliding with a rigid and impermeable society along the way.
What You Need To Know: Over thirty years in the making, director Francis Ford Coppola has been trying to get this picture made since the mid 1970s. Brazilian filmmaker Walter Salles signed on to make the picture in 2005, with Coppola exec producing, but none of it became a reality until early 2010 when casting and financing finally coalesced. Starring Garrett Hedlund and Sam Riley as the two leads andKristen Stewart, Kirsten Dunst, Viggo Mortensen, Amy Adams, Steve Buscemi and more, rounding out the colorful cast, “On The Road” has been a labor of love for both Salles and Hedlund who has also been involved for years, biding his time for when funding would finally arrive. Having directed “The Motorcycle Diaries,” and other striking Foreign-language films, Salles has had an unlucky streak of late. After 2005’s semi-successful “Dark Water,” his 2008 co-directed film “Linha de Passe” failed to ever score distribution in North America. But having worked on ‘Road’ on and off for six years, we’re hoping this one is a major comeback.
Release Date: TBD, but we’re guessing a Cannes bow in May would make sense.
