'The Twilight Saga: Eclipse' predicted not to fare as well as 'New Moon' in the box office

'The Twilight Saga: Eclipse' - Summit Ent.
A lot of people in the film industry have quite famously opined that The Twilight Saga: Eclipse has a better chance of blowing up the 2010 box office by sheer temporal positioning than did The Twilight Saga: New Moon in 2009.
That is in part due to the fact that New Moon was the only one of the top ten biggest box office openings which did not debut during the summer.
So, for the most part, many have taken it as a given that Eclipse will probably outperform New Moon in this year's box office, but at least one source feels otherwise.
Here's what Box Office Mojo has to say on the issue:
Odds are that Eclipse won't reach the heights of New Moon, given the history of closely-timed, serialized sequels. The Matrix Revolutions, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End and even Back to the Future Part III all grossed significantly less than their predecessors. When a second movie is hotly-anticipated after the first movie's success, it's highly unlikely that the next picture will even maintain the momentum (The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter being notable exceptions), and signs from New Moon's run suggest that The Twilight Saga will follow the pattern. New Moon had one of the biggest openings of all time, was extremely front-loaded and probably wasn't as well-liked as the first Twilight: Box Office Mojo readers gave it a "C+," compared to the first movie's "B." Also, the vampire fad could show fatigue by the summer, given the flood of vampire-themed TV shows, movies and paraphernalia in the market.
This is actually a really interesting matter (and not necessarily just because of the issues concerning The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn).
Twilight series fans have certainly proven their staying power over the past few years. The books started coming out roughly five years ago, and the buzz surrounding the series only grows deeper and more defined as time progresses.
BOM has made a good point here that New Moon's box office intakes were "front loaded," meaning a lot of Twilight fans went and saw it first thing and early on in the release, but didn't continue to see it as many over-and-over times as they might've with Twilight. That might not, however, be as crushing of a statistic as this opinion makes it out to be.
Perhaps, instead, you could point to the fact that the first film drew in a lot of the fanbase and that many of Twilight's viewers were newcomers to the series (who maybe went and saw it as a result of its grand opening numbers or the film's initial chatter). In that case, it wouldn't be very surprising that the New Moon viewership came out in a more timely manner.
Even with a front-loaded release, New Moon proved to be a big player in the box office game for 2009. So, the question is: will Eclipse bring in the same latitude of moviegoers as did New Moon?
With the variables pointed to by Box Office Mojo, there are certainly some sequel-related obstacles to consider, but do the historical figures associated with three-quels really apply to this series? Perhaps not. Perhaps the Twilight series likens more to LOTR and Harry Potter than Matrix.
There's at least one obvious similarity which would beckon such an opinion: the fact that they are all based upon book series which have a built-in and long-standing fanbase as opposed to being off-the-cuff continuances of a popular film series. So, yeah, maybe Eclipse follows upon New Moon rather closely in time - and this is not something that most films see success in doing - but there's hardly any chance that Twilight fans will take a rain check in seeing Eclipse in theaters, will they?
Another point to consider, and this is more against BOM's analysis than anything else, is the fact that a large amount of Twilight's audience consists of young adults. A summer release for this demographic would be helpful to them seeing the film (given that school wouldn't be in session).
While BOM certainly goes against the grain and raises some interesting points, it's not altogether convincing that Eclipse will not fare as well in the box office as New Moon.

'Twilight' series boosting sci-fi/fantasy sales in the U.K.

'Twilight' by Stephenie Meyer - Hatchette Books
Millions have read Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series books. That's a fact which has escaped the attention of no one . . . especially not within the publishing world.
According to the U.K.'s Telegraph, the Twilight series has been not only a boost to book sales at large but also to the particular genre of sci-fi/fantasy.
Researchers at Mintel found that almost one in three older children and teenagers enjoy sci-fi/fantasy books, up from 18 per cent in 2005. Overall, over one in ten readers go on to read a title after seeing the film or TV version.
...
"Britain's love of sci fi, in particular Twilight has contributed to a massive boom in sales of the sci fi literature, which is great news for the industry as it is encouraging the all important demographic of young readers back in to reading."
Of course, critics of the series who have suggested that the Twilight series does not have the effect of putting books back in the unlikely reader's hands would eat a little crow upon hearing this news, wouldn't they?
One would imagine (thanks to the use of common sense) that with all of the testimonies offered by Twilight fans as to how reading the series reinvigorated (or perhaps even began) their love of books and reading, that the series would inspire fans to explore other, similar literature. This information certainly serves to bolster that perception. . . . Go Twilight!

Official Twilight Tour: Nashville Day 1

Despite the fact that it is snowing like crazy in Nashville (something that doesn’t really happen there.) the Creation Entertainment Official Twilight Convention is taking place. Ticket are available at the door if you are interested.
According to Alphie, plenty of fans are on site which just happens to be the Opryland Hotel! Peter Facinelli and Gil Birmingham have both made it there with other stars due in.

Twilight Lexicon Interview: Chris Heyerdahl Part 2

Here is part 2 (It’s the final part. Originally we thought we’d do it in three, but we decided not to “milk it”. Here’s part 1 in case you missed it.) of our interview with Chris Heyerdahl who plays Marcus in New Moon.
There is a transcript below in case you have trouble hearing the audio. It was uncharacteristically damp and chilly weather in Miami and Chris was fighting a cold (note the down vest and the cup of tea) when we filmed this at the Creation Entertainment convention in Miami.
We want to thank Chris for being so gracious, especially under the circumstances, for taking the time to talk with us. Special thanks to Creation Entertainment for their assistance. Next week we will have a feature with Chaske Spencer.

L: Can you tell us a little bit about your own research investigation into the character and what you talked about with Stephenie – how she responded to you take on Marcus?
C: I read everything I could about what she had already said, everything that I could find quotes, because I had no idea she was going to be on set.
L: Oh really? You didn’t know?
C: When I was doing my research? I had no idea. It was when I arrived on set.
L: So that was like a little gift.
C: Yeah! HUGE gift!
L: Best resource possible.
C: Huge gift because you never know. You have to make assumptions. And sometimes – here’s the thing, when you read a book again, why does everyone have a different idea in their head? Because they’re reading it from a different perspective. So of course, my perspective could be just as warped as everyone else’s because it’s everything I’ve lived with and all my history is coming with that. So it was great to check in and say, “This is what I’m going to do. This is what I read. Is that what you wrote?” And some of the things she… “Well I… I didn’t…yeah! Absolutely!” It was one of those wonderful things to have her go, “I…yes! Yes that’s exactly… yes, he would have done that!” So it was really fun to play with her in that way, and so together we discovered things that she may or may not have already really thought about.
L: Like the falling out of bed, tossing on your slippers and your robe…
C: Well the desire to be there. I mean, Chelsea has – she’s able to change his alliance. His allegiance to the Volturi is going to stay strong even though he wanted to leave all those thousand odd years ago. Now his allegiance with the Volturi is very strong. Does he always believe the decisions his fellows are making – the rest of the triumvirate – does he believe in the choices they’re making? Not always. But he believes in the Volturi and that, I think, is the fun thing for me to play with Marcus is to not always agree.
L: The duality.
C: Yeah. Not always agree with how things are being run but to choose his battles. When is he going to speak up? When is it necessary to speak up and say, “Guys, you’re going too far. You’re wrong.” That’s the fun of when he speaks in New Moon and perhaps when he speaks in Breaking Dawn those will be the reasons why. He’s always just sanding off the hard edges of his eager compatriots that are sometimes…
The cool thing that kind of backfires for Aro, which I think is really cool is that I would say – and again, this is just my interpretation. I’m sure Michael would disagree with me. I think that Aro sometimes – and Ciaus as well – they sometimes go from a purely personal perspective. And what backfires with Aro in forcing Marcus to stay is that Chelsea is not able to make someone – give someone an allegiance to another person. She can’t make anyone love anybody. She can’t make anyone respect anybody. But she can make an allegiance to a cause – to a group. So she gives him much more – she has this incredibly strong allegiance to the ideals of the Volturi – to what the Volturi stand for – the reason the Volturi have been respectable for so many years. And Aro and Ciaus sometimes bring that to question because they don’t want – like a president or a king or a dictator years in and they’re starting to lose power. They become a bit desperate. And their ideals come into question. I’m reading a Cormac McCarthy book right now, “The Road.” I haven’t seen the film. It always comes into question, how will you survive? What will you do to survive? Will you become one of the bad guys? Will you do morally questionable things or morally degrading things? And this is, I think, what Marcus represents in that little group. He represents the guy who keeps them on the right road.
L: We’ve heard a lot of the cast members say that they don’t actually think the Volturi are the “bad guys,” they’re just doing what vampires do naturally, so it’s interesting to hear you question it from Marcus’ point of view.
C: I don’t think the Volturi – because the Volturi is a clan, right? The Volturi are a ruling clan. So from Marcus’ point of view – no. The Volturi are not bad. Someone has to rule.
L: Someone has to set the rules.
C: Absolutely. Otherwise it would be a free for all.
L: Somebody’s gotta be the police.
C: Absolutely. But it’s a huge responsibility because they’re also the judges. They are the Supreme Court. And the Supreme Court – I mean, what an awful thing if the Supreme Court is corrupt. Leaves you speechless. What’s the point? So they are the Supreme Court. At least the triumvirate is the Supreme Court. People like Charlie’s character and Daniel and Dakota and Cameron, they are there. They are the police. So it’s necessary that the Supreme Court be just. And sometimes, like I said before, the Supreme Court is…
L: A little twisted.
C: Yeah, they have their own political agenda. And by far, Marcus is – that’s not what he’s interested in. He’s interested in the group as a whole. Keeping the eye on the prize and focusing on the just.
L: That is fantastic. Did you talk to Michael Sheen and Jamie Campbell Bower about those things before hand or is this just the world according to Christopher Heyerdahl?
C: Yeah. It’s interesting because how things come about, these are the things that are not necessary to talk about because you discover it as you go. These are things – again I didn’t think about all of this stuff before hand. I did all the research I could, and then how each thing is going to play out – it happens as soon as you walk in. For me, you do all your research –
L: As you get immersed in it.
C: Ultimately, you’re not a one man show. You’re not what the game is. The game is – like I have an idea about talking to you. We met backstage. We get a first impression. And now how is this interview going to go? What are we going to talk about to relate to each other. You can’t plan for that. It’s just whatever happens between us now. The same thing happens when you’re acting with someone. So you have all these ideas. How are they going to play the role? Who is Ciaus going to be? Who is Aro going to be? You won’t know until you meet Aro and Ciaus. It’s not Michael and Jamie, although they’re going to being themselves to it. You have to wait and see what they’re going to do on the day. How are they going to react? How are they going to react to what you do or what you don’t do? And so that’s the fun. That’s the danger. You never know what somebody’s going to do. And so these things were discovered while we were playing. We got to play together for two weeks. These thing were all discovered while on the go. And…
L: That’s the fun of it.
C: That’s the huge fun.
L: In a lot of your work, you wear lots of prosthetics and heavy make up.
C: Sometimes.
L: How did – I’m thinking of SG… from Stargate: Atlantis Todd.
C: Todd. He loves his make up! Lots of make up on! NO! NO really! Four hours love!
L: I even saw some footage of another convention somebody talking about you walking around eating lunch with the Todd make up on and how funny that was. So how does –
C: Just try to eat with that make up on! It’s very delicate. You wouldn’t think that Todd would be so delicate but trying to get it past all the bits and pieces.
L: So how did the makeup experience for Twilight, like with the red contacts and the wig.
C: It was easy.
L: That was easy?
C: That was easy.
L: Cause so many people have complained about the contacts or…
C: I think people will complain about anything, but again it’s your perspective. For someone who has lived through four hours of prosthetics, I can’t complain because other people had to sit through eight hours of prosthetics. I’ve met a couple of people who have done huge, huge prosthetics, and so four hours to them is a joke. Yeah, so to put on a few sparkles and red contacts – it was like a Friday night, luv!
L: Is there anything else that you want to say to the Twilight fandom before we wrap up?
C: You’re all mad!

Quileute Nation Announces Newly Elected Tribal Council

According to their press release the Quileute Nation has just elected a new tribal council. Chairwoman Hatch finished her leadership position and now Anna Rose Counsell-Geyer is taking her place. Pel had the great pleasure of meeting former Chairwoman Hatch at the Creation Entertainment Official Twilight Convention in Seattle. Though she was soft-spoken, it was obvious that Chairwoman Hatch was respected greatly by her people. At the convention she greeted Twilight fans, taught them some words in Quileute, and invited all to come and see the beauty of La Push.
Here is the press release:
“The Quileute Nation located in La Push, WA is pleased to announce the formation of a newly elected Tribal Council.  The Quileute Tribal Council members are as follows:
Chairwoman:  Anna Rose Counsell-Geyer; Vice-Chair: Lonnie Foster; Secretary: Carol Hatch; Member at Large: Tony Foster and Treasurer: Bonita Cleveland.
“Chairwoman Counsell-Geyer is honored to hold the position of Chair and looks forward to serving the great nation of Quileute,”states Spokesperson Jackie Jacobs.”
The staff of the Twilight Lexicon would like to congratulate Chairwoman Counsell-Geyer, and wishes the Quileute Nation continued blessings and prosperity.

Roger Ebert predicts 'Twilight' and 'Up in the Air' star Anna Kendrick will receive Oscar nomination

Anna Kendrick - AP Photoe
Roger Ebert, famed long-time film historian and critic, has just issued his predictions for this year's Oscar nominations (which are due Tuesday), and guess who was on it?
Yep, that's right: Anna Kendrick.
Kendrick (who portrays "Jessica Stanley" in The Twilight Saga: New Moon and The Twilight Saga: Eclipse) has definitely been vetted by a critic or two for her work as "Natalie" in Up In The Air over the past few months, and Ebert's assessment of her potential for film's highest honor is due, he says, to the fact that she is "so young and earnest in the same film."
Anna Kendrick has been nominated for a great many awards over the past few months, including a SAG Award, a BAFTA, and a Golden Globe.
Of course, her most formidable competition at these shows has been Precious star Mo'Nique, and Ebert predicts that she, too, will receive a nod from the Academy.
With the Oscar nominations announcement coming down next week, speculation on this matter will soon become reality.
The same is true for other Twilight-related nomination opportunities (not the least of which is Lykke Li's "Possiblity" from the New Moon soundtrack, which was an early entry for "Best Original Song"), so Tuesday's nomination news will certainly be something for Twilight fans to watch for!

FAME: Robert Pattinson Comic Book

Robert Pattinson will be featured in an upcoming comic book by Bluewater Productions titled FAME: Robert Pattinson.
Millions know English actor Robert Pattinson as Edward Cullen, the vampire with a conscience in the films Twilight and The Twilight Saga: New Moon, the fantasy/romance movies based on Stephenie Meyer’s famous book series.
But there’s more to Pattinson than fake fangs, faraway looks and tousled hair. Pattinson is an accomplished musician, a former model and an actor who’s played both a wizard at Harry Potter’s Hogwarts School and the artist Salvador Dali.
Bluewater Productions in May will ship FAME: Robert Pattinson to comic book shops and retailers across the country. This 32-page comic will trace Pattinson’s career from his first performance in Tess of the D’Urbervilles at London’s Barnes Theatre to his star turn in the Twilight movies.
Writer Kim Sherman said that she is eager to introduce fans to the many sides of Pattinson.
“I love having the ability to introduce high-profile people to readers through an unexpected medium that is both written and visual,” Sherman said. “These biography comics are designed to illustrate interesting tidbits to fans about their favorite figureheads, and inspire them to learn more. I chose to conceptualize A-lister Robert Pattinson from a unique perspective, immersing the reader into the life of the talented actor beyond his most famous role.”
Count interior artist Nathaniel Ooten as one reader who’s gained a new appreciation for Pattinson’s career since reading Sherman’s script.
“Working on this book has opened an entirely new level of Rob Pattinson for me,” Ooten said. “Before starting, I was only aware of the ‘teenage vampire’ Pattinson. After reading the script, studying the subject and listening to his music, I not only became very interested in Pattinson’s future work, but also discovered a new appreciation for this ‘teenage vampire.’”
Bluewater president Darren G. Davis said that he expects Pattinson’s biography to be as popular among Twilight fans as was the comic biography of writer Meyer, which Bluewater published in November of 2009. That particular biography has sold out of several printings.
Twilight fans want to know everything about the talented people who have brought them the story of Edward and Bella,” Davis said. “I’m pleased to be able to bring them Robert Pattinson’s story. It’s our hope that even the most devoted fans will discover a fact or two that takes them completely by surprise.”

Robert Pattinson reflects on working with Pierce Brosnan in 'Remember Me'

Robert Pattinson & Pierce Brosnan in 'Remember Me' - Summit Ent.
Yesterday, the first in the "Ask Rob" series at the Remember Me Facebook page was released, and  Robert Pattinson (who portrays "Tyler" in Remember Me and "Edward Cullen" in The Twilight Saga: New Moon and The Twilight Saga: Eclipse) talked about his attraction to the script and character in the film.
Today, the second in the series has been released, and Pattinson has answered the following question: "What was it like to work with such an experienced actor as Pierce Brosnan?"
In Remember Me, Pattinson portrays Brosnan's son, and Pattinson said (in response to the question) that he found that Brosnan was able to bring a "much more sympathetic" read to the character, "Charles," than was available in the original written script.
In the trailer for Remember Me, you get a good glimpse at the relationship that exists between the two characters they portray. "You could do worse than to have a father who bails you out of jail," Charles says. "I don't want to be bailed out of anything," Tyler responds. "Why do you think Dad doesn't want to spend time with me?" his sister "Caroline" says. "She knows I'll take care of her, and that's all there is, Tyler," Charles continues. "That's all there is?" Tyler smarts back. "It's not enough."
Clearly, the film will offer a great deal of interaction between the two, and it should be interesting to see it play out on-screen.

'New Moon' star Christopher Heyerdahl talks 'Breaking Dawn' with Twilight Lexicon

Christopher Heyerdahl in 'New Moon' - Summit Ent.
Earlier this week, Twilight Lexicon's interview with The Twilight Saga: New Moon star Christopher Heyerdahl was released, and he talked to them about his appreciation for being a part of the Twilight film series' Volturi guard.
Today, though, the second portion of the interview has been released - only furthering our grip on his understanding of the series and his character - and he's had a little to say about The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn.
"When is [Marcus] going to speak up?" Heyerdahl says, "When is it necessary to speak up and say, 'Guys, you’re going too far. You’re wrong.' That’s the fun of when he speaks in New Moon and perhaps when he speaks in Breaking Dawn those will be the reasons why. He’s always just sanding off the hard edges of his eager compatriots that are sometimes…"
Of course, what Heyerdahl is referring to is the boredom that his character exhibits throughout the whole series . . . that is, until Breaking Dawn.
[*Warning: This portion of the post contains spoilers about Breaking Dawn.*]
At the end of Breaking Dawn, the Volturi has a decision to make: do the Cullens and Renesmee get to go on with their happy existences, or are they a threat to the vampire world at large (thusly needing to be eradicated)?
Of course, Marcus - one of the three votes on the matter - has to step in and side with the Cullens on the issue. So, clearly Christopher Heyerdahl is already readying his mind for what his character portrayal will entail with Breaking Dawn (which, of course - standard caveat - is an as-yet-unofficial film). Pretty exciting, huh?
Heyerdahl went on to discuss a great many things about his preparation for the role and how he views the saga in general, and you can check out the full interview here.

'New Moon' star Alex Meraz comes up with an interesting 'Twilight' fan avoidance disguise

Is that a very unfortunate-looking socialite wannabe, or is The Twilight Saga: New Moon star Alex Meraz having a confusing day?
Neither, thankfully.
Yesterday, Alex Meraz tweeted this picture to his followers, joking "I'm soooo famous now I can't even go outside without a disguise!!!!!"
Of course, the disguise - aside from being terribly tacky (which only adds to its hilariousness) - is not very good, since he's toting along a very telling toy wolf in that, er, purse of his.
So close!
As you know, Alex Meraz portrays "Paul" in The Twilight Saga: New Moon and The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, and that character is one of the feistier of the wolfpack. So, it is nice to see Meraz exhibit a little bit of humor to combat any potential perceptions that he likens to Paul's personality traits.
This isn't the first time Meraz has shown his goofier side, though. Who could possibly forget when he went on The Jay Leno Show with co-stars Chaske Spencer ("Sam Uley"), Bronson Pelletier ("Jared"), and Kiowa Gordon ("Embry Call")? In that instance, Meraz and his crew took a stab at fame and fandom, too.
Meraz's use of ladies clothing as a diguise might just be a brilliant way for his co-stars to escape attention when needs be. Of course, if you remember what happened when Kellan Lutz got caught on camera during the "wig incident," you might be a little hesitant to recommend the option to the likes of Robert Pattinson or Taylor Lautner . . .

That pic of him is hilarious. lolololol

Xavier Samuel talks about his Sydney audition for 'The Twilight Saga: Eclipse' (video)

Xavier Samuel as 'Riley Biers' - Photo: David Slade
Did you know that some of the The Twilight Saga: Eclipse auditions for the part of "Riley Biers" took place in Australia? Well, now you do!
In this brand new interview with Eclipse star Xavier Samuel (The Loved Ones, Road Train, Drowning), who ended up getting the part, Samuel explains that his first audition for the role of Riley took place in Sydney, Australia.
"Just did an audition here in Sydney . . . the audition kind of came along, and then I put it down on tape, sent it over, and then flew to Vancouver and it was kind of happening before I knew it," he explained. "There's a lot of hysteria surrounding [the Twilight series]."
Samuel went on to explain that there were a lot of fans that surrounded the film set, noting that "they're very patient."
It is very interesting to hear that auditions for the part took place in Australia.
Back in July, when cast members for Eclipse were first revealed, it was noted that "The global nature of interest in the Twilight series has certainly opened the casting process to a wider sphere of interest."
It was also noted that "With The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, the nationality of cast mates will be at its pinnacle of diversity (as necessitated by the book's description of the newest characters' origins)." Fair enough, huh? It'll be interesting to see where auditions will take place for Breaking Dawn, then, won't it? The Amazon? Ireland? Romania? Hmm . . .
Of course, the conversation eventually devolved into matters a little less relevant to Samuel's career (and the film), but Samuel handled it like a pro, did he not? Take a look!

Today, the first part of the "Ask Rob" video series at the Official Remember Me Facebook page has been released!
In December, fans were asked to submit their Remember Me-related questions for the film's leading castmate, Robert Pattinson (of course, "Edward Cullen" in The Twilight Saga: New Moon and The Twilight Saga: Eclipse) through the facebook page, and they just came pouring in.
In the first video answer, Pattinson explains why he was drawn to the script for the film.
Said he, "Initially, I remember reading the script and thinking I like the flow of the dialogue and stuff, and it was just different. It seemed like, in a lot of ways, the main characters in other movies where there's a young guy as the lead, always seems like a vessel, they always have to be so naive and just ridiculously innocent so the audience can feel like they're with him through the story, and Tyler didn't at all feel like that. He felt like he was a very specific character."
Head on over to the Official Remember Me Facebook page to see the video, and become a fan to get alerts when the next videos are posted (and remember, Remember Me comes to theaters on March 12th)!
