First full-length college course on 'Twilight' approved, and other fans will be able to participate

'Twilight' by Stephenie Meyer - Hatchette Books
A few weeks ago, we learned that Cambridge University was to be introducing the Twilight saga into its Faculty of Education's curriculum so as to better understand children and their relationship to current books. The series has also made its way into middle and high school course plans, onto English reading lists, and beyond.
Now, the first full-length college course on the Twilight series has been approved, according to Dr. Natalie Wilson, the Cal State San Marcos Women's Studies professor who'll be teaching it.
Wilson, who is currently penning an analysis of the Saga's impact on popular culture, revealed that the course will be entitled "Twilight: The Texts and the Fandom" and that fans outside of the classroom will be able to participate in the course in a lot of ways as well. Actual students will be granted general credit for taking this class.
Wilson plans to devise the course materials as a mixture of the books, derivative theory-based works, the films, parodies, and the social and fan internet community. Students of the class will be asked to develop reactions and critiques to these materials in one of several ways (including through parodies, skits, blogs, or texts).
The course will also be unique in that it will involve the internet fan community in two ways. First, fans who are not a member of the Twilight class will be able to follow along and participate through Dr. Natalie Wilson's blog. Second, members of the classroom will be encouraged to reach out into the Twilight fan community and learn more about the blogs and news sources that are out there.
You can see Wilson's blog (the location of said updates) here.
In her blog, she posted about the curriculum approval, saying the following:
I can hear all those naysayers that claim Twilight has nothing to teach us shrieking in dismay “Oh, it’s the end of the academy!”  Well, the same arguments were made when Harry Potter, Buffy, and Star Trek courses made it onto the curriculum. As such courses have proven, examining popular texts and popular culture has much to tell us about our historical epoch, about race, class, gender, sexuality, philosophy, literature, etc.
Wilson considers herself a critical fan, in that she may point out the controversy in some aspects and messages of the Saga, but she states that she is a fan and finds the series to have both positive messages and culturally subsversive ones.

Reminder: 'The Twilight Saga: New Moon' DVD comes out at midnight

'The Twilight Saga: New Moon' - Summit Ent.
Not that you'd need to be reminded of it (or that you aren't already reminded by the onslaught of media attention to this fact), but The Twilight Saga: New Moon comes to DVD tonight at midnight!
There are tons of tidbits of information floating about to prepare you for the occasion, so, to help guide you in the right direction, here's all you need to know about The Twilight Saga: New Moon's DVD release.
  • Decisions, Decisions . . .
There are about a dozen different venues offering exclusive this and thats in their version of the The Twilight Saga: New Moon DVD. It's confusing, constantly changing, and very tempting to just buy all of them so as not to miss anything.
However, one TwiFans contributor has brought forth a great synopsis of what the Walmart, Target, and Borders versions have to offer, so that should prove to be helpful if you're considering one of those options. You can check out the listing here.
Also, Twilight Series Theories has an ecumenical guide that spans availability the world over. It's probably the most comprehensive and informative guide out there. You can see that here.
Finally, Kimmy from His Golden Eyes has put together a great "DVD buying guide" video that introduces the various features available.

  • Coupons
The Official Twilight Twitter page reminded us yesterday that RedPlum is running area-specific coupons for purchase of both The Twilight Saga: New Moon on DVD and Twilight In Forks. You can check those out here.
  • Midnight Release Parties
As a reminder, along with the release of New Moon on DVD, several vendors and venues are hosting New Moon DVD release parties across the country, and several Twilight series cast members and filmmakers are all lined up to join fans at some of them!
New Moon DVD parties are searchable through the Official New Moon website, and a list of what cities' parties are to be attended by whom can be found here.
Phew! That should be about all you need to know to get your New Moon DVD tonight!
UPDATE: Twilight Lexicon is running a tally of which stars' exact appearance locations are known. Check it out here. Also, the Official Twilight Twitter page is releasing some of that information as well.

Look Into Those Eyes: Runaways Makeup Artist Offers Some Tips

The Province has a great interview with The Runaways make up artist Robin Mathews on how she got the look for Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning.
“During that time period, punk rock was just beginning,” Mathews says. “It was all about Suzi Quatro and the Ramones’ pale skin, heavy black eyeliner and hair, which was followed by ‘80s glam glitter and stripy blush. It was eccentric and over the top. Nothing was subtle.”
Mathews pored through thousands of photos and video footage of the Runaways, as well as makeup ads from the 1970s, to capture the look down to the tiniest detail. “We really delved into the research,” says Mathews, who discovered quirky cosmetic habits, including the fact that Jett and Currie each painted just one of their fingernails red.
Mathews eschewed any soft-lighted perfection when it came to getting Stewart and Fanning into character. “It was important to keep it true to life, realistic and not glossed-over Hollywood,” she says. “The Runaways were teenagers, so if we needed to add blemishes or to make them look like they had been out on the road, we did that. It wasn’t always dewy, beautiful skin. It was all about the eyes.”

Those strong, smoky eyes, which always seemed partly obstructed by a shard of Jett’s raven hair and stood in stark contrast to Currie’s platinum locks, were the centreof the band’s signature look. “For a small period of time, Cherie was heavily inspired by David Bowie and wore that stripy blush, but that only lasted for a little while and it always went back to the eyes,” Mathews says.
To get the heavily pigmented smudgy eye, the makeup artist used eye shadows and the Smoky lash mascara from Make Up Forever. And while some of the band’s onstage looks were too outlandish for today’s trend-watchers, there’s a way to create a smoky eye that can work for an everyday look — with an edge.
“First, apply eyeliner [pencil] to the top and bottom of the eye[lids] and smudge with a brush to cover all the little naked spots,” Mathews says. She cautions that eyeliner initially appears too harsh at first, so smudging is key, especially if you want to stay true to Jett and Currie’s look.
“Take different shades of [dark] eye shadow and smudge on top of the eyelid and also rim the inner lid with the eye shadow.”
That procedure is not authentic to the ‘70s, but Mathews says the smudging updates the look.

Chris Weitz reveals that he helmed 'The Twilight Saga: New Moon' because of the cast and fans

Chris Weitz - AP Photo
Chris Weitz's decision to helm The Twilight Saga: New Moon, he revealed to CNN, was based upon his appreciation of the Twilight cast ensemble and the series' fans.
"I think the first reason that I got involved was that I liked the actors very much. I think they're very good. Then I went to see the [first] movie in a little theater, and the response of the fans around me was amazing -- their degree of devotion, the delight they took in it. And you don't always get that as a director. You don't always know that there are going to be people watching and taking pleasure from what you're doing, so that's kind of a wonderful opportunity," he said.
Weitz also said that he was "astonished" at the intensity of the Twilight fandom and that, now that he has nearly completed his work on the Twilight saga, he is prepared to disappear into non-recognizable oblivion once again.
Unfortunately for Weitz, right now his name and face are still two things that Twilight fans are very acutely familiar with.
As you already know, Weitz has declared that he will not be heading back to the Twilight saga to direct The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn.

New Moon' DVD Guide-Summit Approved

Several weeks ago with DVD confusion being at it's most angsty, NkHpTwihard thought she would relieve our aching minds and make the 'New Moon' DVD buying decision easier for us twifans. She made a spreadsheet to help us decide which DVD is right one for us.

Summit Entertainment took a look at it and says it's legit and loved the idea. This chart is Summit approved. That doesn't really matter but

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse' star Cameron Bright makes a good point about vampires

Cameron Bright - AP Photo
For far too long now, non-fans of the Twilight saga have jibed about the sparkliness of the series' vampires.
Well, Cameron Bright ("Alec" in The Twilight Saga: New Moon and The Twilight Saga: Eclipse) has something to say about that.
"We have a side history, something unique. Sometimes I hear people criticizing the way the vampires are presented in the film, the fact that we glitter and turn into diamonds but, here’s the thing: Vampires don’t exist! We can portray them any way we want to," he said to Metrowest.
Well, not any way the actors or filmmakers want to (since the series should be and is based upon Stephenie Meyer's vampire mythology), but close enough.
What Bright is actually saying here is very astute, though, because he's pointing out the most obvious thing about the series - it's fiction.
Not all movie vampires (and certainly not those of the Twilight series) have to conform to the modus operandi and physical make-up of traditional vampire lore. Sure, in some cases it's appropriate, but it is fiction, and there's no real-life, actual source upon which to base the creation of these characters.

Tune in to see 'Twilight' stars play Vampire Baseball live tomorrow and help Haiti at the same time

Chaske Spencer - AP Photo
Tomorrow, New Orleans, Louisiana will be flush with stars from The Twilight Saga: New Moon and The Twilight Saga: Eclipse as the year's first Vampire Baseball event kicks off with Chaske Spencer, Daniel Cudmore, Tyson Houseman, Alex Meraz, and other small-part actors from the series. MUTEMATH, who contributed the song "Spotlight" to the Twilight soundtrack, will be debuting their brand new song at the event as well. Other series actors like True Blood's Nelsan Ellis and Prison Break's Sam Medina will also be present.
The event is sponsored by FanTrips, who has two lined up for this year, and a portion of the proceeds will go to benefit several charities, including the American Red Cross and Hope for Haiti Now, and the 9th Ward Field of Dreams.
The day's events kick off at Zephyr Field at 10:00 a.m., and tickets are still available either here or at the door.
For those that can't make it to the game itself, Pay Per View is allowing patrons to watch the game live on PPV for $4.99, and more details on that are available here and here.

Dakota Fanning appears on 'Late Night with Jimmy Fallon' to promote 'The Runaways'

Dakota Fanning on 'Late Night with Jimmy Fallon'
Wednesday evening, Dakota Fanning followed up her The Runaways co-star Kristen Stewart by appearing on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon to promote the film's release (which occurs today).
In the interview, Fanning answered fan questions, including one about the difficulty of recording or performing certain songs for the film's official soundtrack.
Fanning revealed that the most difficult ("nerve-wracking") song to recreate was "Cherry Bomb" because it is so iconic and loved.
Another question was submitted by co-star Kristen Stewart (a surprise to Fanning). "I think you're amazing, and I'm such a huge fan . . . from everything, not just Twilight, and I was wondering what's it like to kiss Kristen Stewart?"
"It was pretty great," Fanning answered. "We're definitely not kissing in the Twilight movie, definitely not," she continued.

Twilight' star Ashley Greene hits SXSW, talks 'Eclipse'

Ashley Greene - AP Photo
Ashley Greene ("Alice Cullen" in The Twilight Saga: New Moon and The Twilight Saga: Eclipse) made her way to the South by Southwest (SXSW) recently to promote her film Skateland, and FearNET's Jen Yamato got the chance to speak with Greene about Eclipse at the festival.
In the interview, Yamato asked her whether she'd seen any of the film yet, and Greene stated that she got to see a portion of the project right alongside director David Slade.
She also stated that in the film fans would "get to see Alice get kind of down and dirty and see a really intense side of her that maybe you haven't seen before."
Greene went on to reflect about her character's snark in The Twilight Saga: New Moon - particularly in scenes with Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner) - and how that "put the dog out" attitude doesn't transfer into her personal life.
Greene's Skateland is set for a 2010 release, but no exact date has been announced.

Robert Pattinson signs guitar for charity auction

eBay
Adding to the list of things The Twilight Saga: Eclipse and Remember Me star Robert Pattinson has done for charity over the past couple of years is this: he has donated his signature to a guitar so that it could go up on an eBay charity auction to benefit the Midnight Mission.
Here's the story, as told through eBay's listing of the item:
Robert happened to shopping for instruments at Norm's Rare Guitars and Norm (a great friend of The Midnight Mission), asked him if he'd sign a guitar that could be auctioned off to support the services of the charity. Robert was gracious enough to say yes and do it. This terrifically talented actor and singer/musician even consented to have his picture taken with the signed instrument. I didn't post it here, but have it available for authentication (believe it or not this humble actor is bit camera shy when not at work).
According to the listing, "All proceeds from this sale will support the homeless men, women and children that the mission serves."
So far, the listing has been viewed over 6,500 times and is going at around $3,000.00.
As you may or may not already know, the Midnight Mission is an L.A.-based charity group that aims to benefit the local homeless by providing shelter, other accommodations, and progression services.
Michael Welch, Pattinson's Twilight series co-star, has also helped the organization by hosting a charity concert.
The auction for Pattinson's guitar closes tomorrow.

Twilight' series screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg talks about working with the different directors

Melissa Rosenberg - AP Photo
Melissa Rosenberg, screenwriter for the Twilight series films, has a pretty tough job.
She has to take an infinitely explored and intimate set of characters and events and help put them on the big screen.
According to a recent interview Rosenberg did with the Seattle Times, the difference between books and their adaptive movies is like "a painting versus a sculpture."
So are the differences between the directors for the three movies, it seems: Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight), Chris Weitz (The Twilight Saga: New Moon), and David Slade (The Twilight Saga: Eclipse).
According to her, there were distinctions in her working relationship with the three as well.
"For Catherine, we had very little time to work on "Twilight," I was feeding her pages ... and immediately it was a very intense collaboration. With Chris, I'd already finished the second draft before he came on board, so I did a round or two and handed it off to him, and he made changes. ... David is a very visual director ... so with 'Eclipse' I was able to write out specifically some of the sequences per his direction," she revealed.
Notably, Rosenberg also stated that "[d]dapting a book is not simply taking the book and putting it in screenplay format. You would have the longest dull movie in the world."

No 'Twilight' video game means lost financial opportunities?

'Twilight' - Summit Ent.
In the historical tradition of franchise proliferation with uber successful film series like the Twilight saga (Harry Potter, Lord Of The Rings, and Indiana Jones for instance), there is this tendency to go forth with the creation of a home entertainment video game that captures the likeness of the characters, events, and mood involved in the stories.
In the case of Twilight, no such video game (excepting the Twilight phone video game application and Scene It? Twilight for the Wii) has been made, and some sources believe that this has led to a loss in potential profit earnings for the franchise.
According to Computer and Video Games, one expert stated that those potential losses could equal up to millions.
"Given how hot a property it is, [a Twilight video game] could easily present a seven-figure exploitation opportunity, especially if publishers consider taking it beyond retail gaming and considers network gaming," Nick Gibson, an analyst in the field, stated.
Gibson opined that those involved with the process weren't "aware of the potential benefits" of such an endeavor, but I'm fairly certain that those involved in the franchise are completely aware of the possibility that a Twilight video game could fare well in the marketplace.
Other factors, instead, are probably driving the decision to hesitate on pushing forward with game development. Here are a few possibilities:
  • Demographic issues
It could be possible that marketers don't see Twilight fans as avid gamers with active playing systems. This may or may not be a misconception about the demographics of this fanbase, but nevertheless it is a possible perception. (For the record, I have a PS3 and an XBOX 360 and would love to play a Twilight video game!)
  • Difficulties in Translation
Another consideration may be the difficulty in transforming the characters, voices, and occurrences into video game format. For instance, how could they portray the elegance of the meadow scene in video game format? It'd be ripe for criticism whether good or bad, that's for sure.
  • Potential to fail
Speaking of criticism, look at the Avatar video game. For those of you unfamiliar with the Avatar video game, I've played it, and it's bad. The video game suffers the problem of being a poor adaptation of a popular film. Instead of becoming Jake Sully and hanging out with Neytiri in the exotic Pandora wilderness, you are some other marine, forced to kill a bunch of native creatures and Na'Vi people. This is probably because there wasn't a lot of action to recreate for the protagonist of the film. With Twilight, there may be similar difficulties.
  • Lack of 'playable' events
Which brings me to my next point. While the Twilight saga is certainly a journey for its readership, and it is definitely a good source of film material, it may not have the right sort of event progression necessary to make a good video game. I may be wrong about this, but a lot of what happens in the story is inflective and experiential.
Sure, we'd probably be pretty content being Bella and walking around Forks High School and the Cullen manor, but other than that, there aren't too many hands-on or action-oriented sequences in the story. Video game creation typically necessitates such activities.
On the other hand, other characters - especially later in the Saga - do become involved in fighting sequences and the like, so if the main character of the game was one of the Cullens (or interchangeable with other vampires and werewolves in the Saga), there may indeed be some source material to pull from. The problem with this scenario would be the fact that it'd involve an utter shift in perception for the entire Saga. For those that supported the creation of Midnight Sun, this might not be such an issue, but for others, the idea of stepping out of Bella Swan's head might not be so keen.
Still, there were many vehement doubters of Twilight manga, and look at how well Twilight: The Graphic Novel has done so far.

Care Bears on Fire wants on 'The Twilight Saga: Eclipse' soundtrack

'The Twilight Saga: Eclipse' - Summit Ent.
There's one thing you can always count on from MTV's Twilight coverage: their savvy interviewers are always able to sneak in questions to enthusiastic bands about whether they'd like to be a part of the next Twilight saga soundtrack.
In this case, MTV spoke with Care Bears on Fire about their interest in being a part of the soundtrack for The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, and the band responded with extensive use of the word "awesome" ('cause for any band it would be).
The girls went on to talk about their "team" affiliations with the franchise, and one stated that her preference is "Team Bella" but that the band itself was more aligned with a vampire-esque theme.
So, it seems that these ladies are interested in creating a song for the Cullen side of things after all for Eclipser.
Care Bears on Fire is the latest of several bands revealing an interest in being a part of the album.
OK Go, contributors on the soundtrack for The Twilight Saga: New Moon, also want on the album, for instance.

'Twilight' director Catherine Hardwicke reaches out to film students once again

Catherine Hardwicke - AP Photo
A few weeks back, Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke doled out advice for the rising class of filmmakers, and recently, she did another expose into the mind of a successsful director with her talk to film students at Western Connecticut State University.
According to NewsTimes, Hardwicke spoke up about what it is like to embark on the journey of filmmaking.
"The first time you write a screenplay, it's usually not that good," she admitted. She also spoke up about how students can successfully approach casting auditions and the like.
Additionally, Hardwicke reflected on her experience in making Twilight, and how onerous the task of casting these initially esoteric characters was.
"I feel Stephenie's book really draws the reader in. The love story between Edward and Bella was so thrilling and ecstatic that I thought, `How can I make these feelings cinematic in the theater?' she said. To achieve this, "I knew we had to find actors that had an intense, natural chemistry with each other."
Hardwicke went on to talk about the difficulties in process of directing a film like Twilight.

Video for Lykke Li's 'The Twilight Saga: New Moon' OST song 'Possibility' debuts

'The Twilight Saga: New Moon' OST - Summit Ent.
Lykke Li's "Possibility" was possibly one of the most universally loved songs on the official soundtrack for The Twilight Saga: New Moon - especially given its lovely and appropriate placement in the film.
If you'll recall (and if you don't, you can watch it again . . .  tonight!), the song was placed in the scene where Bella endures the first few months of Edward Cullen's disappearance in a catatonic state.
Li's song was the only track from the New Moon soundtrack that made it into early contention for the Academy Awards' "Best Original Song" category.
Recently, the video for "Possibility" debuted on Pitchfork, and while the video does not use footage from the film, it does attempt to carry over a similar mood and, seemingly, message.

Kristen and Dakota Interview

Moviefone has an interview with Dakota Fanning and Kristen Stewart.
Read it all here.
Here is an excerpt:

You can’t tell the story of The Runaways without the trifecta of sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll. Did you think of these as controversial subject matters for you to tackle?

Dakota Fanning: For Cherie, drugs are obviously a big thing. It’s ultimately why she leaves the band and ends this part of her career. I didn’t want that to be all her character is about and all she is, but it is a big part of her storyline.
Kristen Stewart: As much as people think that it’s half a success story and half a cautionary tale, it’s sort of strange because from my perspective, and maybe it’s just because I’m younger, I don’t see the movie as something to learn from. What I learned from it is something very simple and fundamental, is just that people are different and you should always stand up for that. This is a moment in history where The Runaways did that and look at how cool that is, but the whole thing about sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll and how it affects children’s lives, I just wasn’t thinking about that.

Chris Interview

CNN has an interview with Chris Weitz.
Read it all here.
Here is an excerpt:
CNN: For the DVD, what do you think the fans will appreciate the most?
Chris Weitz: What they’ll appreciate most is certain scenes that didn’t make it into the film. … There’s basically more Bella [Kristen Stewart], there’s more Edward [Robert Pattinson], there’s more Jacob [Taylor Lautner], and it’s often sort of more extended versions of scenes where things are discussed at greater length rather than entirely new scenes. I think there’s a lot of good stuff in the movie for fans, and at the same time we didn’t want to get rid of any of their favorite scenes.
